DescriptionEnglish Holly plant, Ilex aquifolium, The symbolic winter decoration that originates with the Druids. A slow growing tree with shiny, prickly leaves and dark red berries. May be grown as a pot specimen and pruned to shape and to increase decorative berry production. Foliage with berries are used as a Christmas decoration. Traditionally a tea from leaves is used as a remedy for fever and upper respiratory congestion. Note: the red berries are poisonous and should not be eaten. English Holly is native of Europe and prefers acid, sandy or gravely loam in a protected, sunny position. Frost resistant but drought tender, an evergreen tree growing to 15m x 4m.
